Like the engine, the clutch is an essential part of your vehicle. This component protects the transmission and engine by disconnecting the wheels from the continually running motor during gear shifts.
A clutch repair or replacement will usually be required at some point in your vehicle’s lifetime, either because of a mechanical failure or wear from excessive milage or driver error. The clutch is not checked as part of your yearly MOT test, as it is located within the gearbox housing and cannot be readily seen by the examiner.
Symptoms of a degrading clutch:
- The engine revs increase without the vehicle speed increasing, especially uphill
- Difficult to select gears including the reverse gear
- Crunching or grinding noise when changing gears
- Power-loss or poor acceleration
- Clutch pedal stiff to operate
- A change in the “biting” point of your clutch pedal – usually becomes high when worn
- Complete loss of drive
